Privacy
Short version: your notes never leave your device, and the little that TempNote does send is anonymous and can be switched off.
Your notes
Notes are plain text. The Mac app keeps them in one small JSON file in ~/Library/Application Support/TempNote/. The Chrome add-on keeps them in Chrome's own local extension storage (chrome.storage.local). Neither copy is uploaded, synced, backed up by us, or readable by us. There is no account and no server for notes.
By default notes are kept until you delete them. Set Delete notes after in Settings to 1 hour, 1 day, 1 week or 30 days and a note is removed that long after its last edit.
What the Mac app may send
- Anonymous error reports via Sentry: a stack trace, the macOS version and the TempNote version when the app crashes. No note text is ever attached.
- An anonymous launch count via TelemetryDeck: one anonymous "app launched" signal per launch (and a one-time "new install" signal on first launch), carrying the app and macOS version and the Mac model. No note content, no IP address, and a salted, one-way user id that cannot be traced back to you.
- Update checks: the app asks tempnote.nikhco.in whether a newer version exists. That request carries the app version and nothing else. You can turn automatic checks off in Settings.
Both reporting services are off the moment you switch off Send anonymous error reports in Settings. When it is off, the reporting SDKs are not even started.
What the Chrome add-on sends
Nothing. It makes no network requests. It uses only chrome.storage.local, the alarms permission (to expire old notes) and the contextMenus permission (for the right-click menu on its toolbar button). It also uses the clipboard permissions: clipboardWrite to put a note on the clipboard when you copy it out, and clipboardRead only at the moment you create a new note, and only if you have turned on New note pastes clipboard in Settings (off by default). Updates come from the Chrome Web Store like any other extension.
What we don't collect
No email, name or account. No stored IP address. No advertising identifiers. No cross-site tracking. No ads. We do not sell or share anything, because there is nothing to sell.
Where the data is processed
Crash data is processed by Sentry (United States). Launch counts are processed by TelemetryDeck GmbH (Germany) on servers in the European Union. Crash reports are retained for up to 30 days. Launch counts are aggregated and cannot be traced back to an individual. For users in the EEA or UK, transfers to Sentry in the US rely on Standard Contractual Clauses.
Your choices
Settings → Send anonymous error reports → off. It takes effect immediately. If you want to know what, if anything, we hold about you, or want it deleted, email [email protected]. Because we intentionally collect nothing that identifies you, there is usually nothing to return.
Children
TempNote is not designed for children under 13 and does not knowingly collect data from them.
Changes
If TempNote's handling of data changes, this page and the date below will be updated, and material changes will appear in the app's release notes.
Who makes TempNote
TempNote is made by NIKHCO, a general partnership registered in British Columbia, Canada, trading as "NiKhCo" on the web. Privacy questions: [email protected].
