Installing on the Mac

Download the DMG from the home page, open it, and drag TempNote into Applications. It is signed with a Developer ID and notarized by Apple, so it opens with a double-click. TempNote shows no Dock icon: look for the glyph in the menu bar, or press ⌥⌘N. Requires macOS 13 (Ventura) or later, Apple silicon or Intel.

The glyph is missing from the menu bar

macOS hides menu-bar items when the bar runs out of room, usually on a notched MacBook with many icons. Quit a menu-bar app you don't need, or use ⌥⌘N, which works whether or not the glyph is visible.

The shortcut doesn't work

Another app may own ⌥⌘N. Open TempNote → Settings (⌘, while it's open, or right-click the glyph) and click Open with to record a different key combination. In Chrome, the add-on's default is ⌥⇧N; change it at chrome://extensions/shortcuts.

Where my notes are

The Mac app keeps one plain-text JSON file at ~/Library/Application Support/TempNote/notes.json. The Chrome add-on keeps its notes in Chrome's local extension storage. Neither is synced anywhere, and the two keep separate notes on purpose. If you want a note somewhere else, copy it out and paste it there.

A note disappeared

By default notes are kept until you delete them. Set Delete notes after in Settings to 1 hour, 1 day, 1 week or 30 days and a note expires that long after its last edit. A note you deleted by hand can be brought back with Undo (or ⌘Z) within four seconds; after that it is gone. TempNote keeps no history, by design.

Updates

With Update automatically on, the Mac app checks tempnote.nikhco.in for new versions in the background and installs them in place. Check now in Settings forces a check. The Chrome add-on updates through the Chrome Web Store like any extension.

Clearing everything, or uninstalling

Right-click the glyph → Clear all notes removes every note but keeps the app. To uninstall, quit TempNote (Settings → Quit, or ⌘Q while it's open), drag it from Applications to the Trash, and, if you like, delete ~/Library/Application Support/TempNote/. If Launch at login was on, macOS removes the login item with the app.

Privacy

Nothing you write leaves your device. The one optional thing the Mac app sends is anonymous crash reports and a launch count, both off when Send anonymous error reports is off. The privacy policy has the details.

Reporting a bug or asking for something

Email [email protected] with your macOS or Chrome version, the TempNote version (shown at the bottom of Settings), and what you expected to happen. Screenshots help. Feature requests are welcome too, with the caveat that TempNote stays small on purpose.
